GUARDSWELL JOBS : EVENTS + HOUSEKEEPING

JOIN OUR TEAM

HEAD OF GUARDSWELL EVENTS

24+ hours a week, 5-6 month contract depending on start date

We’re not going to lie... this is probably our favourite job description to write to date. Its basically the job, i (Anna), would want if it weren’t for the fact that i had to take a slightly broader look at the business. We started Guardswell with the vision of a farm buzzing with bees and happy guests. We pictured long tables on the lean to, with people sitting shoulder to shoulder “oooing and ahhing” over plates passed from one end to the other. The Steading teaming with market stalls- baskets overflowing with sourdoughs and radish. The Cattle Court floor littered with old boxes and packaging, children piling them up, imagining the mechanics of bridge building or rocket launchers. Wellies strewn at the front door, little socked feet rushing back to them for an afternoon in the woods building dens, fairy houses and identifying wood sorrel.

And- we have done all of these things. Looking back over the last few years- we really have hosted a pretty mega range of activities at Guardswell- but it was mainly done alongside the different “more profitable” parts of the business. Because if we’re totally honest- these bits are the most fun, but don’t, sadly pay the ever increasing electricity bills. BUT they’re what make us feel alive, they’re what make us get up in the morning- and they’re what made us want to start Guardswell in the first place.

Get to the point, Anna...

We need someone with a gazillion ideas up their sleeves, someone who will just pick up the phone and say “hey... wanna cook in an earth oven for an event with us at Guardswell?”, or “Hello! We love your work- fancy coming in and showing everyone how to do that awesome thing you do?”. Someone who can roll up their sleeves, and get an idea from start to finish. We need an “ideas person”, a “doing person” but also a “finishing person”- a big ask. Someone who can visualise a retreat weekend, sketching it in their mind, and then regurgitating it into real life.

We like... really awesome food events- dinners, brunches, early morning hilltop breakfasts...! Low waste, local food markets. Cider tasting. Wild, feral, free ranging childrens events. Old skills- both on the farm and in the kitchen- dry stone dyking and making marmalade. Bonkers creative arty things- splattering paint across the back of the greenhouse wall, or crocheting a blanket for a tree.

STEADING, HUT + HOUSE-KEEPER

32+hrs a week, permanent contract

We are looking for someone who LOVES keeping places looking awesome. Someone who has a mad desire to organise, to put things back into their “place” and spots the most minuscule little smudges on skirting boards.

We have quite a mix of different buildings at Guardswell- all with slightly different requirements. The Steading has large expanses of space, lovely clean white walls alongside dusty stone walls, and we love to have big parties in there (although we are always surprised by how clean it is afterwards- touch wood). We have a mixture of Houses and Huts on the farm- that are let out during events, but mainly to people who just want to escape their busy mad lives, have a digital free few days, and watch the world go by. Our accommodation is scattered over the farm, and some of it is off-grid, so we’ve found some pretty inventive ways of keeping the huts and houses spotless.
